a5c7b9f00b CIA operative Nathan Muir (Redford) is on the brink of retirement when he finds out that his protege Tom Bishop (Pitt) has been arrested in China for espionage. No stranger to the machinations of the CIA's top echelon, Muir hones all his skills and irreverent manner in order to find a way to free Bishop. As he embarks on his mission to free Bishop, Muir recalls how he recruited and trained the young rookie, at that time a sergeant in Vietnam, their turbulent times togetheroperatives and the woman who threatened their friendship.
It's April 14, 1991, the final day of work for CIA case agent Nathan Muir before he retires. It has been a job that has not made him opulently wealthy, he planning on using his life savings of $282,000 to purchase a retirement property in the Bahamas. This day, he is called by a task force led by Charles Harker and Troy Folger to provide any personal information on Tom Bishop, a CIA undercover field agent who has just been apprehended by the Chinese government in China, and who will be executed in twenty-four hours by the Chinese on charges of espionage unless the US government claims him, which if they do means answering to what was Bishop's unauthorized operation in China. Bishop, a former US Army sharpshooter, was recruited into the CIAa contract agent by Muir, who actedhis trainer, mentor and case agent in his early CIA career, hence the reason for Muir being called by the task force to provide personal information which may not be in Bishop's official file. What Muir does not tell the task force is that he had heard about Bishop's predicament earlier by one of his CIA colleagues, Harry Duncan, who is currently working an operation in Hong Kong. Although the task force members do not come right out and say so, Muir knows they are working on a different agenda than him, they whose main goal is to protect an imminent trade negotiation between the US and China which means possibly sacrificing Bishopcollateral damage, while Muir is determined to stop the execution and ensure Bishop's safe returnone of CIA's own andhis friend. Muir spends much of the day with the task force, which takes up much of his time to achieve his goal, but which also allows him to feed the task force information or misinformation which may assist his own cause while gleaning information from the task force which he may not know. Assisting Muir outside the war room is his faithful assistant, Gladys Jennip. Getting Bishop back to safety also means that Muir has to figure out what was Bishop's operation in China.
My generation grew up playing one "Spy Game" or another. It was the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis and Francis Gary Powers. Spys were cool. One of the first "grown up" films I saw was "Dr. No." My favorite TV shows were "I Spy" and "Mission Impossible." It's no wonder that I loved this movie. Of course, having "Ordinary" Bob Redford (another Utah resident) in the lead role didn't hurt. And having Brad "I've loved his work since 'Seven'" Pitt in the co-lead spot made it even better. The script was fun, the dialogue tight and the cinematography was superb. I'm more than thankful that there are directors and producers around who are willing to let a story evolve and expand. The hack critics are all saying that is was convoluted and impossible. Funny, haven't read that complaint about the Harry Potter flick. Finally, the Harry Gregson-Williams score will have my foot tapping for days. Great flick!
It's going to be short, because I won't reach a hundred words, including this opening. I like "Spy Game" not because of the music or a single theme or character, neither is it the story by itself or the way it is spread before us. It's not (just) the cast or the way the play in this movies (and lest us forget what they do in other movies). It's not even the way it all rhymes together into something great, entertaining and intriguing. Its because ALL of the above combined.<br/><br/>Thanks for reading. I enjoyed writing it.
Less Bond than simply boring, a tedious and overdirected race-against-time drama with a few espionage elements thrown in.
Muir lies about his number of wives throughout the movie. He refers to agents and assets that servedcover wives,his wives. He actually has only been married once to a Korean woman. His one wife stayed in Korea while Muir did two tours in South America. It's presumed that she has died much earlier. Harry Duncan is located in Hong Kong and played by David Hemmings. We seem him at the beginning of the movie calling Muir at home, and at the end of the movie negotiating the power outage in China. Operation Sideshow was run by the CIA to bug the Chinese side of the trade negotiations happening during the present day in the movie. Tran (the Chinese asset who escapes the prison at the beginning of the movie and is seen in a photograph later) is part of Sideshow, and Bishop piggybacks off this operation by convincing him to share prison schematics and rescue Hadley. Bishop was not a part of this operation, but rather was in China to free Hadley from the prison. She is the mother of the movie's director Tony Scott (and also mother of Ridley Scott).
